The Hebrew Roots movement anticipates the revival of the literal physical temple in a misguided attempt to rebuke the Christian Church with their obedience to the Covenant of Works, the Covenant that Rav Shaul makes clear the Jews sought after in vain.
Rom 9:30 What shall we say then? That gentiles not following after righteousness, have obtained righteousness, even the righteousness of belief, Rom 9:31 but Yisra’ĕl following after the Torah of righteousness, has not arrived at the Torah of righteousness. Rom 9:32 Why? Because it was not of belief, but as by works of Torah. For they stumbled at the Stone of stumbling.
They reject Rav Shaul’s teaching even while they say they adhere to it because they don’t understand that Rav Shaul is introducing a different covenant than the one Israel sought after to attain justifying righteousness.
Jer 31:31 “See, the days are coming,” declares יהוה, “when I shall make a new covenant with the house of Yisra’ĕl and with the house of Yehuḏah, Footnote: See Heb. 8:8-12, Heb. 10:16-17. Jer 31:32 not like the covenant I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Mitsrayim, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them,” declares יהוה.
Sinai was a peculiar covenant, a dark dispensation formed with the framework of the covenant of grace made with Israel alone not all mankind, with the covenant of works published in it to drive them to messiah; but Moses adds expiation of sin by blood typifying the ransom of blood that Messiah was to pay for our sins, as this Covenant, all along had sacrifices and blood to confirm it:
Exod. 24.8. And Moses took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, and said, behold this is the Blood of the Covenant which the Lord hath made with you, concerning all these words.
In Heb. 8, Rav Shaul is not saying that Israel can come back into the covenant they were seeking before 70 a.d. Rav Shaul is saying that that exact covenant is obsolete because of the sin of man displayed in the history of Israel (Heb. 8:13). This peculiar Sinai covenant, published the covenant of works, yet contained confirmations of grace. The Jews missed what the covenant of works was intended to show them, their sin and spiritual destitution, and sought the covenant of works as a means to establish their own righteousness. They should have seen from the sacrifices, their need of redemption but they refused.
Therefore, Rav Shaul explains the revival of the ancient covenant of grace. A different covenant that the Jews refused to seek because of their pride.
The writer of Hebrews says,
“Heb 8:7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. Heb 8:8 For finding fault with them, He says, “See, the days are coming,” says יהוה, “when I shall conclude with the house of Yisra’ĕl and with the house of Yehuḏah a renewed covenant, Heb 8:9 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Mitsrayim, because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them,” says יהוה. Heb 8:10 “Because this is the covenant that I shall make with the house of Yisra’ĕl after those days, says יהוה, giving My laws in their mind, and I shall write them on their hearts, and I shall be their Elohim, and they shall be My people”
Notice he doesn’t say that Yeshua came to renew the first covenant. It says that Yeshua came to renew a different covenant, a second covenant, than the one Israel was seeking after. Rom 9: 30-33. It is because of this that I am leaning towards Owen’s view that Sinai was a distinct covenant in itself that was materially the same as the covenant of works but also contained aspects of the covenant of grace.
When faced with the clarity of Rav Shaul’s explanation of the Gospel, the Hebrew Roots Movement will gasp in horror complaining:
Yeshua said he did not come to do away with one jot or tittle of the Law!!!!! You cannot do away with the Temple service and the Levitical Priesthood! That is abrogating the Torah!
I have spoken to this before:
http://drakeshelton.com/2013/09/18/excursus-on-the-end-of-sin-offerings/
The Torah itself altered the sacrificial system, Lev 5:11-13, and explained the Levitical service as a placeholder of a greater heavenly reality. Exo 25:40.
Moreover, the Temple of Ezekiel is clearly interpreted by the Apostles as the Messianic Congregation not a literal physical temple.
Remember, the Old Testament Prophets did not understand what they were prophesying about and the time and manner of how their prophecies would be fulfilled:
1Pe 1:10 Concerning this deliverance the prophets have sought out and searched out, prophesying concerning the favour for you, 1Pe 1:11 searching to know what, or what sort of time, the Spirit which was in them was pointing out concerning Messiah, when it was bearing witness beforehand the sufferings of Messiah, and the esteems that would follow, 1Pe 1:12 to whom it was revealed that they were serving, not themselves, but you, in these matters which now have been announced to you through those who brought the Good News to you by the Set-apart Spirit sent from heaven – into which messengers long to look into.
In the prophets we read:
Zec 3:8 ‘Now listen, Yehoshua the high priest, you and your companions who sit before you, for they are men of symbol. For look, I am bringing forth My Servant – the Branch1. Footnote: 1Or Sprout. See Isa. 4:2, Isa. 11:1, Jer. 23:5, Jer. 33:15, Zech. 6:12.
Zec 6:11 “And you shall take the silver and gold, make a crown, and set it on the head of Yehoshua the son of Yehotsadaq, the high priest, Zec 6:12 and shall speak to him, saying, ‘Thus said יהוה of hosts, saying, “See, the Man whose name is the Branch1! And from His place He shall branch out, and He shall build the Hĕkal of יהוה.
Isa 11:1 And a Rod shall come forth from the stump of Yishai, and a Sprout from his roots shall bear fruit. Isa 11:2 The Spirit of יהוה shall rest upon Him – the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of יהוה, Isa 11:3 and shall make Him breathe in the fear of יהוה. And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, nor decide by the hearing of His ears.
Jer 23:5 “See, the days are coming,” declares יהוה, “when I shall raise for Dawiḏ a Branch of righteousness, and a Sovereign shall reign and act wisely, and shall do right-ruling and righteousness in the earth. Footnote: Or sprout. Jer 23:6 “In His days Yehudah shall be saved, and Yisra’ĕl dwell safely. And this is His Name whereby He shall be called: ‘יהוה our Righteousness.’
Jer 33:15 ‘In those days and at that time I cause a Branch of righteousness to spring forth for Dawiḏ. And He shall do right-ruling and righteousness in the earth. Jer 33:16 ‘In those days Yehuḏah shall be saved, and Yerushalayim dwell in safety. And this is that which shall be proclaimed to her: ‘יהוה our Righteousness.’
Now what is it that Messiah builds when he comes into his ministry?
Mat 16:18 “And I also say to you that you are Kĕpha, and on this rock I shall build My assembly, and the gates of the grave shall not overcome it.
So it is not a literal physical temple but a group of people!
We read in Acts 15:
Act 15:13 And after they were silent, Yaʽaqoḇ answered, saying, “Men, brothers, listen to me: Act 15:14 “Shimʽon has declared how Elohim first visited the gentiles to take out of them a people for His Name. Act 15:15 “And the words of the prophets agree with this, as it has been written: Act 15:16 ‘After this I shall return and rebuild the Booth of Dawiḏ which has fallen down. And I shall rebuild its ruins, and I shall set it up, Act 15:17 so that the remnant of mankind shall seek יהוה, even all the gentiles on whom My Name has been called, says יהוה who is doing all this,’ Act 15:18 who has made this known from of old.
Notice that James mentions prophet(S) plural not singular.
Paul continues this theme:
Eph 2:19 So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the set-apart ones and members of the household of Elohim,1 Footnote: 1Rom. 11:17-24, Isa. 14:1. Eph 2:20 having been built upon the foundation of the emissaries and prophets, יהושע Messiah Himself being chief corner-stone, Eph 2:21 in whom all the building, being joined together, grows into a set-apart Dwelling Place in יהוה, Eph 2:22 in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of Elohim in the Spirit.
This is in agreement with what Yeshua said in John 2:
Joh 2:19 יהושע answered and said to them, “Destroy this Dwelling Place, and in three days I shall raise it.” Joh 2:20 Then the Yehuḏim said, “It took forty-six years to build this Dwelling Place, and You are going to raise it in three days?”Joh 2:21 But He spoke about the Dwelling Place of His body. Joh 2:22 So, when He was raised from the dead, His taught ones remembered that He said this to them. And they believed the Scripture and the word which יהושע had said.
Paul says,
2Co 6:14 Do not become unevenly yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness? And what fellowship has light with darkness? 2Co 6:15 And what agreement has Messiah with Beliyaʽal? Or what part does a believer have with an unbeliever? 2Co 6:16 And what union has the Dwelling Place of Elohim with idols? For you are a Dwelling Place of the living Elohim, as Elohim has said, “I shall dwell in them and walk among them, and I shall be their Elohim, and they shall be My people.”
Interestingly, in this passage Rav Shaul is quoting from the prophecy of Ezekiel’s Temple!
Eze 37:21 “And speak to them, ‘Thus said the Master יהוה, “See, I am taking the children of Yisra’ĕl from among the gentiles, wherever they have gone, and shall gather them from all around, and I shall bring them into their land. Eze 37:22 “And I shall make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Yisra’ĕl. And one sovereign shall be sovereign over them all, and let them no longer be two nations, and let them no longer be divided into two reigns. Eze 37:23 “And they shall no longer defile themselves with their idols, nor with their disgusting matters, nor with any of their transgressions. And I shall save them from all their dwelling places in which they have sinned, and I shall cleanse them. And they shall be My people, and I be their Elohim, Eze 37:24 while Dawiḏ My servant is sovereign over them. And they shall all have one shepherd and walk in My right-rulings and guard My laws, and shall do them. Eze 37:25 “And they shall dwell in the land that I have given to Yaʽaqoḇ My servant, where your fathers dwelt. And they shall dwell in it, they and their children and their children’s children, forever, and My servant Dawiḏ be their prince forever. Eze 37:26 “And I shall make a covenant of peace with them – an everlasting covenant it is with them. And I shall place them and increase them, and shall place My set-apart place in their midst, forever. Eze 37:27 “And My Dwelling Place shall be over them. And I shall be their Elohim, and they shall be My people. Eze 37:28 “And the gentiles shall know that I, יהוה, am setting Yisra’ĕl apart, when My set-apart place is in their midst – forever.”
And Peter:
1Pe 2:4 Drawing near to Him, a living Stone – rejected indeed by men, but chosen by Elohim and precious –1Pe 2:5 you also, as living stones, are being built up, a spiritual house, a set-apart priesthood, to offer up spiritual slaughter offerings acceptable to Elohim through יהושע Messiah. 1Pe 2:6 Because it is contained in the Scripture, “See, I lay in Tsiyon a chief corner-stone, chosen, precious, and he who believes on Him shall by no means be put to shame.”1 Footnote: 1Isa. 28:16. 1Pe 2:7 This preciousness, then, is for you who believe; but to those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief corner-stone,”1 Footnote: 1Ps. 118:22. 1Pe 2:8 and “A stone of stumbling and a rock that makes for falling,”1 who stumble because they are disobedient2 to the Word, to which they also were appointed. Footnotes: 1Isa. 8:14. 2See John 3:36, Heb. 3:18.1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a set-apart nation, a people for a possession, that you should proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light,1Pe 2:10 who once were not a people, but now the people of Elohim; who had not obtained compassion, but now obtained compassion.
Believers are said to be sweet smelling offerings to Yah:
2Co 2:14 But thanks be to Elohim who always leads us on, to overcome in Messiah, and manifests through us the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. 2Co 2:15 Because we are to Elohim the fragrance of Messiah among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. 2Co 2:16 To the one we are the smell of death to death, and to the other the fragrance of life to life. And who is competent for these?
Php 4:18 Indeed I have all and more than enough. I have been filled, having received from Epaphroditos what you sent, a sweet-smelling fragrance, an acceptable offering, well-pleasing to Elohim.
Heb 13:10 We have an altar from which those serving the Tent have no authority to eat.Heb 13:11 For the bodies of those beasts whose blood is brought into the Set-apart Place by the high priest for sin, are burned outside the camp. Heb 13:12 And so יהושע also suffered outside the gate, to set apart the people with His own blood.Heb 13:13 Let us, then, go to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach.Heb 13:14 For we have no lasting city here, but we seek the one coming.Heb 13:15 Through Him then, let us continually offer up a slaughter offering of praise to Elohim, that is, the fruit of our lips,1 giving thanks to His Name. Footnote: 1Or “bulls of our lips” – See Hosh. 14:2. Heb 13:16 And do not forget to do good and to share, for with such slaughter offerings Elohim is well pleased.
This language is not confined to the Apostles. The prophet Malachi stated:
Mal 1:11 “For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down, My Name is great among nations. And in every place incense is presented to My Name, and a clean offering. For My Name is great among nations,” said יהוה of hosts.
Some will claim that Ezekiel’s Temple is only for memorial offerings not sin offerings. Yet the passage clearly says that the offerings in Ezekiel’s temple are for atonement for sin.
Eze 45:15 “And one lamb from a flock, from two hundred, from the watered pastures of Yisra’ĕl, for grain offerings, and for a burnt offering, and for peace offerings, to make atonement for them,” declares the Master יהוה.
Moreover, The Hebrew Roots don’t take these prophecies literally either. Ezek. 37:24-25 mentions David ruling over this Temple yet they see this as typology of Messiah. Believers are called Jerusalem and Zion. Heb. 12:22-23 Gentiles believers are also called Israel. Gal 6:16.
